Water Management
All of Parramatta's catchments drain to the Parramatta River, a highly significant tidal estuary in Sydney. To protect this resource, impacts on receiving water quality from further development of the catchments needs to be minimised. Stormwater drainage networks and the floodway capacity of waterways need to be managed whilst preserving/enhancing the ecological integrity of the waterway systems.

Protection of Waterways
Objectives
- O.1To ensure development contributes to the protection and rehabilitation of waterways in order to improve waterway health and to develop and maintain ecologically sustainable waterways.
Design Principles
- P.1Development is to make provision for buffer areas for the preservation and maintenance of floodway, riparian corridors and habitat protection. (Note: Council has specific setbacks for some waterways.)
- P.2Development abutting waterways is to be landscaped with local indigenous species to protect bushland and wildlife corridors and soften the interface between the natural landscape and the urban environment.
- P.3The piping or artificial channelling of natural watercourses and drainage channels is not permitted. Consideration is to be given to re-opening piped or lined drainage systems wherever feasible.
- P.4Development is to ensure that natural channel design principles are incorporated in any works on or in waterways.
- P.5Ongoing maintenance costs are to be considered in the design of any waterway protection features.
